Was the Trinity Invented at Nicaea? What the Early Church Really Believed

Was the Trinity Invented at Nicaea? What the Early Church Really Believed>/p>

Was the doctrine of the Trinity invented at the Council of Nicaea in AD 325? If the word Trinity doesn't appear in the Bible, how can Christians say the teaching is biblical? Lenny Esposito welcomes Dr. Fred Sanders of Biola University for a thoughtful conversation about the biblical foundations and historical development of the Trinity. They examine what the earliest Christians believed about Jesus, why the Council of Nicaea became a turning point in Christian history, and how the church worked to express the relationship between the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Dr. Sanders explains why theological terms can summarize biblical teaching without appearing word-for-word in Scripture. The conversation explores the Nicene Creed, the decades of debate that followed, the significance of the Council of Constantinople, and Sanders's concepts of the “Nicene line” and the “Constantinopolitan corridor.”

The discussion also considers eternal sonship, contemporary disagreements about the Trinity, and why the identity of Jesus is essential to understanding the Christian gospel.
